id Software has renamed and detailed the ad-supported version of Quake Arena which has long been rumoured to have been in development.

The game, previously known as Quake Zero, is now to be called Quake Live and will be supported by adverts provided by IGA Worldwide, according to Eurogamer.

Quake Live will launch at QuakeLive.com when it is finished and will include friends lists, sponsored tournaments and stats tracking. It’ll also be completely free to play as it will be entirely ad-supported – id is calling this an example of the new ‘freemium’ genre.

Contrary to rumours that the game will run in browsers, id Software has said that the game will only be distributed online and will actually be a downloadable game.

It’s also rumoured that the game will be coming to the Xbox 360′s Live Arcade service.
