TipEx (a Commonwealth analogue for Wite-Out and other correction-tape products) has an ingenious and engaging YouTube marketing campaign: a video called “NSFW: A hunter shoots a bear,” branches off into a kind of video-text-adventure, where you are invited to type verbs into a box and see what the bear and the hunter do with one another (you can get funny results out of “f*ck,” of course, and also “gets high with” and “dances” — I’m sure there’s more). It’s a kind of next-generation Subservient Chicken, and the (no doubt blisteringly expensive) creative reworking of YouTube’s familiar user-interface makes it even more click-trancey than its forebears.

It’s a move that has been rumoured for weeks, but it wasn’t until this week that Intel made it official: the spending spree continues, with the company buying Infineon’s wireless division for $1.4 billion.

According to The New York Times, the acquisition – announced officially by Intel head Paul Otellini yesterday following weeks of rumours and speculation by industry watchers – will give Intel’s wireless technologies a boost, and mean that the company’s chips form part of Apple’s successful iPad – although not, to Intel’s chagrin, the CPU.

The move comes mere weeks after Intel spent a whopping $7.68 billion buying security specialist McAfee and a further – undisclosed – sum on Texas Instruments’ cable modem division, bringing the total value of Intel’s acquisitions to over $9 billion in August alone.

Speaking to Fox Business and transcribed over on VentureBeat, Otellini claimed that the decision to purchase Infineon came about due to “the technology they have today, the customer connections they have today, and where the technology in general is going,” and explained that Intel’s plan is to work towards “a period in the not so distant future where all of these [wireless] functions can be [built] on a single chip.”

While Otellini hasn’t announced an Atom processor with integrated wireless technology yet, the possibility is there – albeit “farther down the road.”

The deal is expected to complete early next year, pending regulatory approval, after which we’ll start seeing Infineon technologies – including LTE mobile broadband connectivity chips – appearing alongside Intel’s existing mobile chips.

Are you pleased to see Intel looking to expand its wireless know-how, or has Otellini gone spend-happy in an industry that’s still trying to claw its way out of the credit crunch? Share your thoughts over in the forums.

The Gregson Street train trestle in Durham, NC, is 11-foot-8-inches high. Occasionally, a driver of a 12-foot-tall truck approaching the trestle doesn’t pay heed to the flashing warning lights and gets the top ripped off his trailer. It happens often enough that Jürgen Henn has a Web site called 11foot8.com with videos of the unfortunate incidents.

Low clearance can be a real challenge for a truck driver. Especially inexperienced drivers of rental boxtrucks seem to be quite oblivious to the warning signs and flashing “overheight” warning lights at this railroad trestle in Durham, NC. So frequently do trucks crash into the 11-foot-8 clearance trestle, that the railroad company installed a crash beam in front of it. This massive steel I-beam bears the brunt of the impact, protecting the structure that supports this fairly busy railroad track. Believe it or not – they already had to replace the beam once! The videos of these crashes document the severity of the impact, and they show how frequently these crashes produce a real hazard for pedestrians and other vehicles.

Clearly, the warning signs aren’t enough to stop all drivers. Maybe the city could lower the street under the trestle? Or add a stop sign? I’m sure they’ve thought of those things already. Right?

Irrational Games has announced “BioShock Infinite”, the 3rd installment of the first person shooter series BioShock. Set in 1912, BioShock Infinite takes place in the sky city of Columbia (previously BioShock was in an underwater setting).

Former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt has been sent to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned in Columbia since childhood. Booker develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.
